The world is filled with powerful rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive performance cars, the complexities of putting vast amounts of power through the front wheels has generally left this drivetrain layout underpinning more modestly powered vehicles.

There are benefits to the FWD layout, the ability to pack all the running gear in one space benefits cabin space and construction costs are also lower but asking the front wheels to take on the tasks of both forward propulsion and direction changes have generally resulted in torque steer and unruly handling characteristics in the past.

Advances in technology have allowed most of these problems to be all but eliminated and there are some very capable front-drive performance cars out there today.

There have been some notable front-wheel drive cars over the years that helped move the game on too and we cover some of the most notable ones as well as the latest and greatest offerings around. Start slideshow
