SUVs and crossovers and hugely popular, but most are not full-fat 4x4s – they are driven by their front or rear wheels.
All-terrain versions in the ranges are generally a little more expensive and often slightly less economical, but they are a necessity for many people living out in the sticks, for instance.
We’ve selected 20 budget 4x4s to show that driving a car offering extra traction and capable of tackling mud, snow, ice and flooding needn’t cost the earth…
Vauxhall Mokka X
This jacked-up, rugged version of the popular Mokka certainly looks the part, and it’s well equipped too. The Design Nav 1.6CDTi (136PS) 4X4 costs £22,275.
Skoda Yeti
The quirky Yeti has some hardcore fans because it’s fun to drive, distinctive, well made and practical. The 2.0 TDI 110PS 4×4 SCR costs £20,755.
SsangYong Tivoli
Not only is the Tivoli good looking and great value for money, it doesn’t drive too badly either and it comes with a tempting five-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. The Tivoli EX diesel 4×4 manual starts at just £17,950.
Dacia Duster
Renault’s budget brand has come up trumps with the Duster – chunky, spacious and surprisingly capable, it represents great value. At £11,495, the Duster Access SCe 115 4×4 is an introduction to off-roading for the price of a supermini!
Mitsubishi ASX
Practical, spacious and solid, the ASX is well equipped and easy to drive. The ASX 1.6 Diesel 4 4WD is priced from £24,505.
Ford Kuga
Practical, comfortable and well built, the Kuga is a solid, safe SUV choice. Thanks to a recent extensive facelift, the Kuga is a car transformed. Mazda CX-5

Jeep Renegade

Mitsubishi Outlander

SEAT Ateca

Suzuki Jimny
The legendary Jimny can still put a big smile on your face. Yes, it’s cheap and cheerful, but it’s also tough and a real mountain goat of a 4×4. The 1.3 SZ3 costs just £12,999.
Toyota CH-R
Toyota’s Nissan Qashqai rival certainly turns heads with its ‘flowing’ design, created to look like it is always moving, even when at a standstill. At £26,550 the cheapest off-roader in the range is the 1.2 Turbo Auto AWD Excel.
Subaru XV
Another Subaru revelation off-road, the XV is a hidden gem of the automotive world. The 2.0i SE will set you back £22,495 – and for that you get a distinctive, seriously capable 4×4.
SsangYong Korando
If you’re looking for a budget alternative to the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai – with four-wheel drive – then consider the Korando. At £18,500, the 2.2 SE 4×4 offers big bang for your bucks.
Suzuki Vitara
Sharp looking, easy to drive and well equipped, the Vitara is another bargain 4×4. The 1.6 SZ-T ALLGRIP is priced from £18,799.
Mazda CX-3
Mazda’s distinctive compact crossover is fun to drive, well built and practical. The 2.0 SKYACTIV-G 150PS Sport Nav AWD is a classy compact 4×4, priced from £22,795.
Subaru Forester
A left-field choice perhaps, but the Forester is reliable, practical, easy to drive and superb off-road. The 2.0i XE is priced at £26,494.
Skoda Kodiaq
At 4.69 metres long, 1.88m wide and 1.67m high, the new Kodiaq certainly has road presence. Add Skoda’s signature clean-cut lines, and it’s a substantial, yet stylish package. At £26,385, the Kodiaq SE 1.4 TSI 150PS 4×4 represents a lot of car for your money and is also available as a seven-seater.
Kia Sportage
Spacious, stylish and good to drive, it’s no wonder the new Sportage is selling like hotcakes. Blessed with a seven-year warranty, the 1.6-T GDi GT-Line AWD will set you back £25,195.
Suzuki SX4 S-Cross
