In a remarkable feat of number-crunching, Rome-based motor industry analytics company focus2move has listed the world’s countries in order of how many cars were sold in each one during 2016. Thanks to its efforts, we can tell you that the 32nd strongest car-buying nation is Chile, Finland has beaten Kuwait into 50th place, and Botswana lies 99th.

Rather than go through the whole list, we present here the countries with the largest car markets, along with their most popular cars – some you’ll be very familiar with, others you have probably never heard of.

(Sales figures are as published by focus2move. Information about models comes from various sources.)
