Halloween is about all things scary, be it pumpkins, bats, ghosts, vampires, zombies – and cars.
There’s no getting around it, some just look plan sinister – the kind of cars you wouldn’t want to see in your rearview mirror, or draw up alongside at traffic lights.
Prepare yourself for some of the meanest-looking, creepy cars the world has ever seen. And beware, this ghoulish gallery is not for the faint-hearted…
Vegas hearse
There’s something very sinister about big old American hearses – this creepy customised Cadillac example spotted in Las Vegas is even more frightening…
Halloween horror
In 2014 the London Supercar Workshop created this memorable Halloween Scream car which went on display at the London Motor Museum. Maybe more truck than car, it’s the stuff of nightmares…
Mean muscle
Here’s a suitably scary American muscle car taking part in the annual Halloween TunnelRun, held in London. Some 30-50 cars take part, some travelling from as far as The Netherlands and Switzerland.
Calling all cars!
Police drama Z Cars was a big hit in the 1960s and the cars were often the stars. This is a classic still from 1965 featuring one of the many Ford Zephyrs used in the series. The officers have clearly seen something pretty frightening – must be Halloween…
Aston frightening
This is the 2014 Aston Martin DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo, arguably one of the meanest-looking concept cars ever…
Fright night
The first generation Buick Electra made between 1959-61 probably featured the meanest-looking face ever. Imagine seeing that in your rearview mirror on Halloween night?
Honda horror?
Who’d have thought it – a cutting edge supercar with a sinister side. A thing of beauty most of the time, the new NSX would make a decent Halloween ride from this angle.
Cyclops car
Designer Harley J Earl of General Motors examining a full scale model of his Buick Le Sabre concept in 1951. Years ahead of its time in many ways, that cyclops front end is the stuff of nightmares.
Holy Batmobiles!
Batmobiles ain’t what they used to be – the latest version is simply terrifying – imagine coming across this on Halloween night?
Dutch courage
The owners of this BMW Z4 travelled all the way over from The Netherlands to take part in the Halloween TunnelRun, which is held in London every year under a cloak of secrecy until the car set off – loud and proud!
Munster munch
Actors Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis (as their characters Herman and Grandpa from the hit 1960s TV series he Munsters) inspect their car. Known as the Munster Koach, the customised vehicle was a cross between a hearse and a dragster and obviously looked suitably spooky.
Mean Maybach
There was something of the night about the one-off Maybach Exelero, created in 2004. If Dracula drove a car…
Who ya gonna call?
Arguably one of the most famous movie cars ever, The Ectomobile, or Ecto–1, was a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance conversion used in the 1984 film Ghostbusters. It was used to carry the team’s ghost-capturing equipment throughout New York City.
Manic Merc
The new Mercedes-AMG GT3 racer is a phenomenal car oozing menace.
Dressed to kill
This Halloween custom car deserves a prize. Cobwebs, skull, spider – it’s got everything.
Horror icon
It may look harmless enough, but this is arguably the most famous horror film car of all. It’s one of two 1958 Plymouth Fury models used in the movie Christine. Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, the film was a huge hit in 1983.
Mean Maserati
The Levante, Maserati’s first SUV, has divisive looks. One thing’s for sure, it has one of the most distinctive snouts ever. Jaws springs to mind. Bond and Great White…
Scary ride
Two-wheelers can be scary too. This Slammer custom bike pictured at the 2013 SEMA Show is pure Dark Knight.
Hatchback horror
In 2014 a ghost-hunting Toyota Yaris headed down to Britain’s most haunted village, Pluckly in Kent, for a Halloween picture publicity stunt.
Dodgy Dodge
This 1959 Dodge Coronet police vehicle doesn’t just look mean, it also the kind of cop car that could easily (and probably did) feature in one of those black-and-white Hitchcock horrors.
Plymouth Prowler
Manufactured between 1997 and 2002, the retro-styled Plymouth Prowler must have seemed like a good idea at the time. Also marketed as a Chrysler, it was more horror than hot-rod.
Nightmare car
In 2014 Warranty Direct created this monstrosity, dubbed the Horrific 40RR0R, by combining the worst-performing cars from each of the categories measured by its Reliability Index.
